SWISH, SPIT, REPEAT : Why & how to use a mouthwash

From toothbrushes made out of twigs to floss made out of horse hair, we have been mindful of oral care since ancient times. But what about mouthwash? Berries, vinegar and mint leaves have been used earlier for mouthwash. Charcoal, fruits, and dried flowers were also used in ancient Chinese, Greek, Egyptian and Roman cultures though there is no credible evidence about the effectiveness of these products. Today, mouthwashes help in controlling plaque and gingivitis, promotes gum health, reduces bad breath and freshens it up.

Earlier formulations of mouthwashes contained alcohol for stabilization. Today alternate ingredients with germ killing properties are used instead of alcohol stabilization. These products are effective in killing germs that cause plaque and gingivitis.

Why is mouthwash necessary?

Brushing the teeth twice a day alone is not enough as this might leave behind plaque. Therefore, it is necessary to use a mouthwash as it can reach places that are normally not reachable just by brushing alone; like places in between the teeth. DENTE 91 Mouthwash contains oils of peppermint and menthol; ingredients which are known for penetrating and reducing plaque biofilms left behind post brushing. By reaching the whole mouth, DENTE91 Mouthwash reduces plaque growth eventually reducing the risk of developing dental caries.

Mouthwashes for special needs

One can also find mouthwashes for targeted solutions. For instance; some people suffer from dry mouth conditions. DENTE91 Mouthwash is specially formulated with the moisturizing power of Lactoferrin, that provides relief from dry mouth while also freshening up the breath.

Rinsing with a mouthwash

Also known as oral rinse, mouthwashes are generally used to prevent bad breath and tooth decay. While mouthwash doesn’t replace brushing and flossing when it comes to oral hygiene, it is only effective when used properly. Different products contain different ingredients to give different results, therefore it is important for one to choose the right mouthwash that goes with their requirement.

Despite the fact that one needs to follow the package instructions on priority, there are some basic instructions to be followed. Start by brushing and flossing your teeth. Follow by rinsing with a mouthwash. Pour the required quantity of mouthwash and swish it around. Mouthwashes are not meant for ingesting, so make sure not to swallow it. Gargle for 30 to 60 seconds and then spit it out.

It is always ideal not to rinse the mouth after using a mouthwash, as a mouthwash will continue to work even after you spit it out. So, by rinsing the mouth with water after using a mouthwash, the strengthening and cleaning abilities of the mouthwash gets diluted. While there are no hard and fast rules regarding when to use a mouthwash, for best results it is recommended to be used right after brushing and flossing.

How does a Mouthwash work?

Based on the ingredients in the mouthwash, different products work for different purposes. In general, using a mouthwash is tied closely to a good oral hygiene routine. Mouthwashes with active ingredients like peppermint oil, menthol and lactoferrin work by killing the bacteria. They work by getting into the crevices between the teeth and places like the back of the mouth and kill the bacteria breeding there. That is why a slight tingling sensation is felt when swishing with mouthwash.
